Statistics show that in the US alone we “enjoy” 11 million formal business meetings each day and we waste $37 Billion in unnecessary meetings every year. If there were any other single item that drained your bottom line like that you would quickly take a long hard look at it.

There are many tips out there to make meetings more effective but the critical conversation you need to have with yourself is whether attending this meeting is a match for your commitments?

As one workweek ends, do you look at the next week or even weeks and assess whether the meetings you are scheduled to attend are a match for the commitments you have at work?

How do I know?

Here are some questions to ask to begin this assessment:
• What are the results you are accountable for?
• What are your priorities for the next week, month, quarter?
• Are the meetings on your calendar going to help you deliver those results and stick to those priorities?
Here are some questions to ask about those meetings?
• Does the meeting have a published agenda with a clear outcome to be delivered at the end of it? If not consider this a sign of a possible time waster.
• Do you need to be there or can you empower a team member to attend and make decision on your behalf?
• If it is a status update can it be done via email or a shared drive vs. another meeting?
