Browsing in the bookstore the other day (the real, brick-and-mortar kind), we came across a book outlining ways to reward employees. On the back of the book was a quote from the author. It reads, “You get the best effort from others not by lighting a fire beneath them, but by building a fire within them.”

Leadership is like sharing fire. Unlike managers, who are tasked with setting goals and objectives and both requiring and helping employees to meet them, leaders don’t require people to follow them.

People follow, indeed, because leaders have sparked something in them — because the leaders have shared their own fire, passion, and unique outlook. And extraordinary leaders make the most impact when surrounded by people who fulfill the leader’s vision as though it were their own.
