Trying to be the world’s best airport is kind of like aiming to be the world’s best prison. You can add all the amenities you want, but ultimately people still want to leave as soon as possible.
Singapore’s Changi Airport, however, may just slow down the usual passenger exodus. Although named the world’s top airport for the fourth year in a row in 2016, Changi is not resting on its laurels.
New features unveiled in 2016 or currently under development range from the entertaining to the opulent. For instance, a new interactive “dot portraits wall” lets passengers take selfies with different tourist spots in Singapore as the backdrop, then receive them via email.
In August, the airport’s Crowne Plaza hotel, which has twice been named the best airport hotel in the world by Skytrax, completed an expansion. In addition to the expected luxury hotel-room amenities, the Crowne Plaza has a direct connection to the departure hall and a courtyard view of the airport’s runways.
And in 2018 Changi will open the Rain Vortex, the world’s largest indoor waterfall, according to Wired.
The airport’s focus on the customer experience comes as Singapore continues to emerge as a destination and transfer hub. In 2015 a record 55.4 million passengers passed through Changi Airport. Click To Tweet
